OK, come on now people!

Copied from Nikki Painters blog found HERE:

I have joined in the cause with some other great etsy bloggers and am posting more info on the CPSIA for those who still don't know about it. Feb 10th is now considered Black Tuesday and it's a day that will certainly affect us all! Thanks for reading!

As parents and concerned citizens I'm sure most of us at one time or another have been confronted with the question of lead poisoning. But have you asked yourself what your government is doing to protect your children from lead contained in toys? The answer? They're banning toys, taking books from schools and libraries, hurting low income families, killing entrepreneurial spirit and risking putting the economy in an even greater depression than we've seen in decades. I'd like to introduce you to their solution: the CPSIA.

Do you know about the CPSIA? No? Then I ask you to take a few minutes to find out about it.

The CPSIA stands for Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, a new set of laws that will come into effect on 10 February, 2009 and will impact many, many people in a negative way. Make no mistake, this is very real. View it for yourself. If Forbes, the American Library Association and numerous other media are paying attention, perhaps you should too.

How will these new laws affect you? Well, here are a few examples:

To the Parents of Young Students:
Due to the new law, expect to see the cost of school supplies sky rocket. While those paper clips weren't originally intended for your student to use, they will need to be tested now that your 11-year-old needs them for his school project. This law applies to any and all school supplies (textbooks, pencils, crayons, paper, etc.) being used by children under 12.

To the Avid Reader:
Due to the new law, all children's books will be pulled from library and school shelves, as there is no exemption for them. That's okay though, there's always television. Our children don't need to learn the love of reading after all.
Article from the American Library Association http://www.wo.ala.org/districtdispatch/?p=1322

To the Lover of All Things Handmade:
Due to the new law, you will now be given a cotton ball and an instruction manual so you can make it yourself since that blanket you originally had your eye on for $50 will now cost you around $1,000 after it's passed testing. It won't even be the one-of-a-kind blanket you were hoping for. Items are destroyed in the testing process making one-of-a-kind items virtually impossible. So that gorgeous hand-knit hat you bought your child this past winter won't be available next winter.

To the Environmentalist:
Due to the new law, all items in non-compliance will now be dumped into our already overflowing landfills. Imagine not just products from the small business owners, but the Big Box Stores as well. You can't sell it so you must toss it. Or be potentially sued for selling it. You can't even give them away. If you are caught, it is still a violation.

To the Second-Hand Shopper:
Due to the new law, you will now need to spend $20 for that brand new pair of jeans for your 2-year old, rather than shop at the Goodwill for second hand. Many resale shops are eliminating children's items all together to avoid future lawsuits.

To the Entrepreneur:
Due to this new law, you will be forced to adhere to strict testing of your unique products or discontinue to make and/or sell them. Small businesses will be likely to be unable to afford the cost of testing and be forced to close up shop. Due to the current economic state, you'll have to hope for the best when it comes to finding a new job in Corporate America.

To the Antique Toy Collector:
Due to the new law, you'd better start buying now because it's all going to private collection and will no longer be available to purchase. Because the new rules apply retroactively, toys and clothes already on the shelf will have to be thrown out if they aren't certified as safe http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123189645948879745.html

To the American Economy:
Already struggling under an economy that hasn't been this weak in decades, the American economy will be hit harder with the inevitable loss of jobs and revenues from suppliers, small businesses and consumers. The required testing is far too costly and restrictive for small businesses or individuals to undertake.

To the Worldwide Economy:
Due to this new law, many foreign manufacturers have already pulled out of the US market. You can imagine the impact of this on their businesses.

If you think this is exaggerating, here is a recent article from Forbes

And for those of you prepared to be stupefied and boggled, The New Law

Did you know? If this upsets or alarms you, please react.

Thanks Nikki for the info! I am going to go pick my jaw up off the floor now....

Today we didn't have time to work on any thing in the kitchen but the counter guys came and measured. I also had to call IKEA several times because 1) We are missing pieces from our order that we paid for. 2) Pieces we thought that were ordered and paid for ended up being Out Of Stock and never got ordered so we had to follow up on that. 3) The dishwasher panel is a bit off so we need to get it looked at.FUN times!

So while I was doing all this K was having a BLAST with her watercolor paints...

Yep, the Tinkerbell Fairy wanted to be all green! Luckily it was just watercolor paint so it washed right off. Little STINKER!!

Day 18-19

WOW! Things are looking SO GOOD if I do say so myself =) We got so much done this weekend so now we can really see how everything is laid out. We finally have all the right tools too (air compressor, cordless drill, etc.) so putting together every thing went so smoothly.

We got everything assembled:

We hung up one of the rails and put up a few uppers. All of the IKEA stuff is really modular so it just slides on the rail so you can adjust things as needed. Its pretty neat!

We got all the bases in, leveled and the island in! I cant believe all the space we have. It is so amazing. I just love the tile more and more too.

We even got the corner cabinet in around all the plumbing. That was going to be our tricky spot and it went great! Jer did a great job cutting out the holes and then it slid/dropped right in.

We ended up going with a squared off corner cabinet and then we are doing a fancy corner sink. It was just going to be too crazy to move all the plumbing and it will work better with the island,. It should be really neat!

So tomorrow the guys come to make the template for the Granite countertops and then we'll have about 2 weeks to get everything done before they are installed. WOHOO!

Hooray!!

Well we are getting someplace at least.

Update from Baby Cheapskate:

According to an article in today's Tennessean, Suzanne Kay-Pittman, public relations and communications manager of Goodwill Industries, says the thrift store chain will "sit tight" in the face of upcoming CPSIA regulations: ""We're not going to overreact at this point. We don't know for sure what it all means. Do we have to throw everything away? How will it affect the big-box retailers, consignment stores?"

The article also quotes Consumer Product Safety Commission spokesperson Scott Wolfson as saying that the CPSC "is working on a 30-day comment period where we will hear from consumers, manufacturers, retailers, anybody affected by the act." Wolfson says that the CPSIA will go into effect on February 10 even though the specifics of the law will not be finalized by then. Wolfson says that the CPSC wants to hear from the public regarding how the CPSIA will affect them.

* * * * *

The CPSC has just released specific guidelines for the resale industry:

http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml09/09086.html

"Sellers of used children's products, such as thrift stores and consignment stores, are not required to certify that those products meet the new lead limits, phthalates standard or new toy standards."... "The new safety law does not require resellers to test children's products in inventory for compliance with the lead limit before they are sold. However, resellers cannot sell children's products that exceed the lead limit and therefore should avoid products that are likely to have lead content, unless they have testing or other information to indicate the products being sold have less than the new limit. Those resellers that do sell products in violation of the new limits could face civil and/or criminal penalties. "

So how will consignment stores and thrift stores obtain this "testing or other information" on their existing inventory? If they can't, they'll be forced to dump it. It sounds like there are still more questions that need to be answered. Either that, or I'm just in denial.

Keep writing and calling.
You're making a difference!

Warm and Cozy

This winter has been so cold so all I wanted for Christmas was a nice warm jacket. I started my hunt for a jacket in November. I saw a girl at a conference I attended with this gorgeous damask jacket. I asked her where she got it and she told me about Cherella and that it was from last year. So my OCD kicked in and I was on the hunt! It turns out Cherella is owned by 2 women from SLC so I was even more excited to support them and get this fabulous coat. I tried 3 stores, including one in Park City and I could not find it! Finally I emailed the owners and they said they had some in Boise. However, since it was from last year the photos were off of their website and they couldnt send me pictures. I just went with it and they ended up sending me 2 with a 30% discount. I got my box and couldnt wait until Christmas so I opened it immediately. I was SO DISAPPOINTED!! The jackets were not was I was looking for at all. The worst part too was the button holes on the jackets were completely shredded. It was terrible. So I returned them immediately and actuall just ended up dropping the box off myself because I didnt want to pay shipping since they are in SLC any ways. But now I am STILL waiting for my refund! It's been almost a month. I really did want to support this local company but I am so disappointed. I am going to give it another week and then I am just going to dispute the charges with Visa. I just dont get it....

But I still wanted a jacket! So during all of this Jer was on the hunt too and he found me the perfect jacket. Gotta love Patagucci! (a.k.a Patagonia)

It is the softest warmest down parka ever! It is like wearing a cuddly blanket around. So now I am warm in the chilly weather and I will be better prepared to face the winter weather in MN.

WTH!!

OK, I want to keep my kids safe from lead too but this is INSANE!!

On Feb 10, 2009 Federal law "mandates that all products sold for those 12 and younger — including clothing — be tested for lead and phthalates, which are chemicals used to make plastics more pliable. Untested items will be considered hazardous, whether or not they contain lead."

Days 10-12

We are EXHAUSTED but got a lot accomplished this weekend. We primed the walls and laid the tile! The entire floor is DONE! We were up until 4 a.m. Sat night but we got all the tiles laid. Then the following day we finished the grout. It is so amazing to see it all done! I love the tiles and think we did a great job. We even build a few of the cabinets last night so we are getting close. The counter guys will come next Monday and design the template for the counters so we have a week to get things all placed. But now that the floor is done we can move in our stove and dishwasher and then set up everything else. It's coming alone quick nicely!!

Remodel cont.

Things are moving along quite nicely!!

Day SEVEN:

Jer took on the gas pipe and it turned out so great! We got it moved, all new pipe and fittings and a fancy new shut off valve as well.

Day EIGHT:

More backerboard and wall patching. Nothing too exciting.

Day NINE:

We were hoping to get to the flooring today but that didnt work out quite as planned. We even had the wet saw rented and every thing for the tile.... oh well. But we did get the floor patched up and got the water for the fridge all set! I think it turned out so nicely!

But all the backerboard is down and the walls and ceiling are almost smooth. Our cabinets arent going to go all the way to the ceiling this time (cheaper and easier!) so we want to make sure everything is smooth. We thought about texturing everything but then that would be harder to clean, which is not good in the kitchen. Also, we are holding off on a backsplash and the walls were tiled before so we have been patching and sanding like crazy!

We also removed the pocket door in the 1/2 bath which we were pretty proud of! The door sticks when it closes all the way and has trapped several people inside! It will also a bit too long once the tile is in so we needed it out to replace it. Those doors are wonderful but pretty tricky and you are basically sunk if they break. Cutting out a wall of sheetrock to repair a track is one thing but cutting out a plaster wall... for get it! So luckily we just removed a few screws and the oor popped out. We'll probably end up replacing all of them now though =) Which means then we will probably replace the regular doors too. How come one project always leads to ten more?

We also have a very good helper around:

Abby just loves being right in the middle of it ALL THE TIME! She's just lucky she is so cute.

Happy New Year!

I wish I could say we were spending the NY drinking Black & Tans out of our custom Squatters mug club mugs...

Aren't those awesome!! But no..... I have strep again for the 3rd time in 2 months and Abby is still sick so we spent the night in. We ordered pizza, I drank 1/2 a beer, which took about 5 hours to get down, and then I was asleep by 10. I did wake up at 12:30 though to give Jer a New Years kiss and then fell back asleep.

We are old....
